(河合楽器製作所 Kawai Gakki Seisakusho), who discontinued the Teisco brand name for guitars in 1969 (1977 in Japan), but continued to use it for electronic keyboards until the 1980s.

In 1967, the company was acquired by Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co. In 1956, the company name was changed to Nippon Onpa Kogyo Co., and changed to Teisco Co. The company was originally called Aoi Onpa Kenkyujo (roughly: Hollyhock Soundwave or Electricity Laboratories). The company was founded in 1946 by renowned Hawaiian and Spanish guitarist Atsuwo Kaneko and electrical engineer Doryu Matsuda. However, the exact name of company establishing and producing the Teisco brand was not that name, and rather, they had frequently renamed their company. The brand name "Teisco" was established in 1948, and sometimes incorrectly explained as an acronym of Tokyo Electric Instrument and Sound Company. However, it was also a way to add the de rigeur Spanish cachet necessary for “Spanish” guitars of the time.Teisco Del Rey brand logo, re-badged in the US after 1964. This was no doubt added to the Teisco name, in part, to suggest quality. Occasionally, you may see plain Teisco logos from this period with the crown in the background, but no Del Rey.ĭel Rey, of course, is Spanish for “of the king,” which explains the crown. This had an italicized Teisco superimposed over a crown with a script Del Rey underneath, backed by a round circle. In about 1964, Jack Westheimer began bringing in Teisco guitars bearing the Teisco Del Rey logo. At some point in ’64 the Japanese Teisco logo changed from the circle Swan-S to a stylized, modern sans-serif type set in an italicized T shape.
